HMRC approved mileage rates

If you use the simplified mileage method, you claim a flat rate for every business mile instead of adding up the actual running costs of your vehicle:

VehicleFirst 10,000 milesOver 10,000 miles
Car or van45p25p
Motorcycle24p24p
Bicycle20p20p

Worked example

You drive 12,000 business miles in your van: 10,000 × 45p = £4,500, plus 2,000 × 25p = £500. Total claim = £5,000.

Keep a simple log of your business journeys — date, destination and miles — to back up your claim.
